NPP runs to supreme court: “We can’t trust Mahama – Awal Mohammed

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it has asked the Supreme Court to clarify the constitutional provisions governing presidential term limits, including how they apply to non-consecutive terms in office. Speaking with Bright Atobrah Awusi on Globe TV’s News Lens on Thursday, October 29, 2026, party’s newly appointed Deputy Communications Director, Awal Mohammed, said the legal action seeks clarity on the limits of presidential tenure and eligibility to contest future elections.

According to Mohammed, the application concerns articles 62(1), 66(1) and 66(2) of the Constitution, with particular attention to the interpretation of the eight-year maximum presidential tenure.

Mohammed explained that the party wants the court to determine how the constitutional provisions apply when a president serves a term, leaves office and later returns to seek another term. The discussion also touched on John Dramani Mahama’s eligibility to contest future presidential elections, amid speculation about his political intentions and previous statements concerning future bids.”We can’t trust him . He can say that I will not contest, but he will tell you that it’s a clarion call from his own party to do it. So the best thing is that let’s nip it in the bud”.

Mohammed presented the party’s move as a request for constitutional clarity on presidential tenure and the circumstances under which a person may seek election again.

The discussion further examined the distinction between an individual’s political ambitions, a party’s choice of presidential candidate and the constitutional requirements for holding office.

Mohammed addressed the role of party decisions in determining future candidacies, alongside the legal questions the NPP wants the Supreme Court to resolve.
