Political Science lecturer at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Dr Jonathan Asante Otchere, has questioned the decision by delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to elect John Boadu as the party’s National Chairman.
Dr Asante Otchere said the considerations that influenced NPP delegates to reject John Boadu when he contested the position of General Secretary four years ago have not significantly changed.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, October 5, Dr Asante Otchere said the outcome of the NPP’s latest national executive elections raised questions about what may have influenced delegates to back John Boadu for the chairmanship position.
Dr Asante Otchere believes the result requires closer examination, particularly in light of John Boadu’s previous unsuccessful attempt to become the party’s General Secretary.
“The most important portfolio that everyone was talking about was the Chairmanship, and the question that I asked the delegates before the election was based on the polling that had come out putting John Boadu ahead of Boakye Agyarko.
“So the question I asked myself and the delegates is that those considerations that made you vote against John Boadu for the General Secretary four years ago, have those factors changed?
“If those factors have not changed, then what could have been the real motivating factor to show that John Boadu was going to win, and he indeed won? It was part of the narrative that Boakye Agyarko was anti-Bawumia.
“Since those factors have not changed, for me, it was a wrong decision on the part of the delegates to elect John Boadu.”
