The Member of Parliament for Techiman North, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has commissioned two newly constructed and fully furnished Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds at Kokoago and Bonya in the Techiman North District of the Bono East Region.
The facilities were handed over to the District Health Directorate as part of the MP’s commitment to expand access to quality healthcare, particularly for pregnant women, children, and the elderly in rural communities. Speaking to the media after the handover, Ofosu-Adjare said the projects fulfilled promises made to the two communities during the 2024 electioneering campaign. She explained that the CHPS compounds are intended to bring healthcare closer to residents and reduce the risks associated with travelling long distances for medical care.“These are not just fulfilled promises; they are geared towards bringing healthcare to the doorstep of the people, especially pregnant women,” she said.

According to the MP, the facilities are equipped with essential commodities and medical supplies to support effective operations. Each CHPS compound has a maternity room with a delivery bed, washrooms, an Out-Patient Department (OPD), a waiting area, and a residence for health workers. A motorbike was also provided to help health workers undertake door-to-door healthcare services.
Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare noted that health professionals are already deployed. She stressed that this underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the critical needs of communities towards achieving the universal health coverage. “Today, the Regional Minister, the DCE and myself, are here to deliver on the promises we made to them,” the MP stated.
She commended the District Chief Executive for Techiman North, Johnson Kwabena Adom, for ensuring that the projects were completed ahead of schedule. She noted that early completion would allow residents to begin benefiting from the facilities without delay.

The Bono East Regional Minister, Francis Owusu Antwi, said the facilities reflect the government’s commitment to the well-being of every citizen. He urged the District Health Directorate and healthcare workers to maintain the facilities properly to ensure their longevity and continued service to the communities.
The Techiman North District Director of Health, Alex Kumah, said the new CHPS compounds would make healthcare more accessible and contribute significantly to reducing maternal mortality in the district.“Again, it will help pregnant women during delivery. When we did our half-year review, we observed that the number of pregnant women who come to hospital for delivery is low because they have to travel long distances to get to hospital in Techiman,” he said. He expressed confidence that the availability of the facilities would increase attendance for antenatal and delivery services, ultimately reducing maternal deaths in the district.

Residents of Kokoago and Bonya described access to healthcare as a daily struggle before the construction of the facilities. They said pregnant women were often transported on motorbikes over long distances to access care in Techiman, sometimes leading to complications and avoidable deaths. The commissioning of the Kokoago and Bonya CHPS compounds is expected to improve access to primary healthcare for residents of the two communities and surrounding areas.
