NADMO Raises Alarm Over Looming Earthquake Threat in Central Region

The Central Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr. Emmanuel Kwesi Dawood, has warned that excessive quarrying across parts of the Central Region could trigger a major earthquake. He raised the concern while addressing the media after a three-day workshop for district NADMO directors in the region.

Mr. Dawood expressed concern that stone quarrying activities are rapidly overtaking areas such as Gomoa East, Awutu Senya East, Awutu Senya West, Gomoa Central and Gomoa West, as well as nearby mining communities. He urged operators in these districts, particularly within the Kasoa enclave, to halt blasting immediately, describing the explosives used at quarry and mining sites as a “time bomb” that could trigger an earthquake at any moment.

As part of preventive measures, NADMO has begun demolishing dilapidated structures identified as being at high risk of collapse in the event of a disaster. The organisation is also drilling and improving drainage systems in selected districts to curb flooding and related hazards ahead of the anticipated heavy rains.

Mr. Dawood cautioned coastal residents against illegal sand mining, warning that the practice weakens coastal defenses and heightens the risk of disasters. He announced the formation of a NADMO taskforce to monitor beaches and arrest those engaged in unlawful sand winning activities.

The Regional Director commended all 24 district NADMO directors in the Central Region for their dedication and urged them to remain vigilant to ensure a disaster-free area. Stakeholders at the workshop praised him for organizing the programme, pledged closer collaboration with NADMO, and encouraged staff to work proactively rather than waiting for disasters to strike.
