Hanan Abdul-Wahab’s Lawyers Accuse Attorney-General of Abuse of Power Over Arrest

Lawyers for Hanan Abdul-Wahab have accused the Attorney-General, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), and the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) of abusing state power following their client’s arrest and continued detention.

In a statement issued on July 8, 2026, and signed by Godfred Yeboah Dame of Dame & Partners, the legal team rejected claims made by the Office of the Attorney-General regarding Abdul-Wahab’s arrest, describing the action as unlawful and a deliberate attempt to undermine a valid court order.

The lawyers said Abdul-Wahab was arrested at the Accra International Airport on July 4, 2026, despite obtaining approval from the High Court in Accra to travel to the United Kingdom.

They challenged the Attorney-General’s claim that a review application against the court’s travel order had already been filed, stating that their checks at the court registry showed the application was only filed on July 8, 2026.

The legal team further argued that Abdul-Wahab has not been formally charged or presented before any court over allegations levelled against him.

On claims that he attempted to withdraw funds from frozen bank accounts, the lawyers denied the allegations and challenged the state agencies involved to provide evidence of any attempted transaction. They also argued that previous account-freezing orders had expired.

The lawyers also criticised new bail conditions reportedly set by EOCO, including a GH¢5 million bond with two justified sureties, describing the conditions as excessive and an attempt to prolong their client’s detention.

According to the legal team, Abdul-Wahab maintains that he is prepared to remain in custody until the courts determine that his fundamental rights have been protected.

The matter continues to generate legal debate over the powers of state investigative agencies and the protection of individual rights in ongoing criminal investigations.
