The Ministry of Education has condemned the alleged sexual abuse of a 14-year-old student with autism at Bolgatanga Girls’ Senior High School in the Upper East Region.
The alleged assault, according to the Ministry, was perpetrated by two watchmen employed by the school.
In a statement signed by the Deputy Minister for Education, Dr Clement Abas Apaak, the Ministry expressed grave concern over the incident and stressed that schools have a responsibility to protect and nurture students.
The Ministry emphasised that a minor cannot be held responsible for sexual abuse committed against her by an adult.
Following the incident, the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, directed the Ghana Education Service to immediately investigate the matter and submit its findings.
The GES has also been directed to ensure that the student receives comprehensive care, including the necessary medical attention and counselling to support her recovery.
The Minister further directed the immediate restoration of the student’s boarding status at the school.
The Ministry has assured the student’s family and the public that the matter will be pursued to ensure justice, while reaffirming its commitment to protecting the safety, dignity and rights of children within Ghana’s education system.
