A nine-year-old boy, identified only as Issah, has died after being swept away by floodwaters during a heavy downpour at Amangoase in the Berekum Municipality of the Bono Region.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday night, May 19, between 9:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., according to residents.
Information gathered by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) indicates that the boy was returning to his sleeping place after having dinner at the family house when he reportedly slipped into a gutter following the rains.
Speaking in an interview, the boy’s grandmother, Madam Donkor, said Issah left the house shortly after the downpour, but moments later, some residents heard him crying for help.
She explained that attempts by bystanders to rescue the child proved unsuccessful as the strong floodwaters swept him away.
Residents later alerted personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), who retrieved the body.
The body has since been deposited at the Holy Family Catholic Hospital mortuary in Berekum for preservation and autopsy.
