The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has announced that 16 structures in the Greater Accra Region have been declared unsafe and will soon be pulled down to prevent further tragedies.
This decision comes in the wake of a tragic incident on Sunday, June 7, when a three-storey building at Avenor in North Kaneshie collapsed, resulting in three fatalities and leaving two fighting for their lives. During a visit to the site, the Minister explained that the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) had already flagged several buildings as hazardous and unsuitable for occupation.
He noted that immediate action is being taken to relocate residents and dismantle the affected structures before they pose additional risks. According to him, the demolition exercise is expected to begin within the week.
Muntaka emphasized that while some events may be beyond human control, authorities have a responsibility to address preventable dangers, particularly those arising from unsafe buildings.
He added that this intervention forms part of a wider government effort to curb avoidable disasters and protect lives and property. The recent collapse has once again drawn attention to the persistent problem of deteriorating buildings, poor construction practices, and weak enforcement of safety standards in the region.
