Wontumi’s Lawyers Hopeful of Plea Deal as EXIM Bank Fraud Case Adjourned to July 27

Lawyers for the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, say they remain optimistic that ongoing plea negotiations with the Attorney General will lead to a resolution of the EXIM Bank fraud case.

Chairman Wontumi, together with two other accused persons, including his company, is facing charges of defrauding by false pretences, money laundering, authoring forged documents—including an allegedly altered receipt—and intentionally causing financial loss to a public institution exceeding GH¢30 million.

Although he initially pleaded not guilty to the charges, Chairman Wontumi later instructed his legal team to initiate plea negotiations by formally writing to the Attorney General.

When the case was called at the High Court on Monday, July 6, the prosecution requested an adjournment to allow time for the plea discussions to be concluded.

Meanwhile, counsel for Chairman Wontumi expressed confidence that the ongoing negotiations would produce a favourable outcome.
