Suppliers Threaten Protest Over GH¢50 Million Free SHS Debt

Businesses supplying basic items to senior high schools say they are struggling to survive as government delays in payment continue to take a toll on their operations.

The National Association of Institutional Suppliers (NAIS) has announced plans to picket at the Ministry of Education on June 11, 2026, over unpaid arrears of about GH¢50 million under the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme.

According to the association, its members, who supply uniforms, house dresses, and school fabrics, have not been paid for goods delivered since 2023. The prolonged delay, they say, has left many suppliers unable to pay workers, restock materials, or sustain their businesses.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, June 3, NAIS indicated that several attempts to engage relevant authorities have yielded no results, prompting the decision to protest.

“The picketing aims to draw attention to our plight and to urge the immediate release of funds owed to our members,” the association stated.

NAIS warned that the situation, if not addressed, could disrupt the supply of essential items to schools and undermine the smooth implementation of the Free SHS programme.

The association is also calling on the media to highlight the issue and help draw the attention of key stakeholders.

The planned demonstration is expected to take place at the Ministry of Education, as suppliers push for urgent government action to settle the outstanding debts.
