The Water Resources Commission (WRC) has announced that a controlled spillage of water from the Bagré Dam in Burkina Faso could commence from Tuesday, August 11, 2026, if the reservoir reaches its maximum trigger level.
In a press release dated August 4, 2026, the Commission said it had received an update from SONABEL, operators of the Bagré Dam, indicating that the reservoir’s water level stood at 232.93 metres as of August 4, representing a filling rate of 62.77 percent.
According to the WRC, SONABEL plans to begin the controlled spillage if the reservoir water level rises to 234.00 metres.
The Commission has therefore advised residents living along the White Volta River and adjoining communities to take the necessary precautionary measures and strictly adhere to safety directives issued by their respective Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and other relevant emergency agencies.
The WRC said the notice is intended to enable communities and stakeholders to prepare adequately for any potential impact should the controlled release become necessary.
