President John Dramani Mahama has acknowledged that flooding cannot be completely eliminated, describing it as a natural phenomenon experienced by countries around the world. However, he stressed that the government’s priority is to reduce its frequency and minimise its impact on lives and property.
Speaking after convening a National Security meeting in the wake of the recent floods that affected several communities in southern Ghana, the President said the latest disaster was more severe than previous incidents due to the combined effects of climate change and rapid urbanization, particularly in Accra.
Mr. Mahama said the government has deployed the Ghana Armed Forces to support flood mitigation efforts, while the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) continues to provide relief to affected residents.
He further disclosed that the Minister of Finance has released funds from the Contingency Fund to finance ongoing relief and long-term flood mitigation measures.
The President noted that several countries across West Africa have also experienced devastating floods and loss of lives, expressing optimism that the government’s interventions will help reduce the impact of future flooding and alleviate the hardships faced by affected communities.
