Police arrest two suspected armed robbers linked to Bolgatanga highway attacks

The Ghana Police Service has arrested two suspected armed robbers believed to be behind a series of highway and street robberies in the Bolgatanga metropolis and along the Bolgatanga-Walewale highway.

The suspects, identified as Moses Akungoe, popularly known as “Mosbee,” and Jacob Akugri, also known as “Weezy,” were arrested in Kumasi on May 9, 2026, by the CID Headquarters Operations Unit after weeks of intelligence-led surveillance operations in Bolgatanga and Walewale.

According to preliminary police investigations, the suspects were part of a robbery syndicate armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols, operating across the Upper East and North East regions. The gang is alleged to have attacked several victims, robbing them of cash, mobile phones, and motorbikes, with some incidents reportedly resulting in fatalities.

Police say the suspects admitted involvement in a number of robbery operations during interrogation and identified the alleged gang leader as Issaka, as well as another accomplice, Araafat, both of whom remain on the run.

The Police Service says efforts are underway to arrest the remaining suspects, including individuals believed to have supplied weapons to the gang.

The two suspects remain in police custody assisting with investigations, while authorities continue efforts to recover stolen items and identify other accomplices linked to the robberies.
