A mobile money operator has been shot and killed, while another individual is in critical condition following a robbery attack at the Gomoa Dominase Onion Market in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region. The incident has left traders and residents shaken, deepening concerns about safety in the area.
Eyewitnesses say a group of armed men stormed the busy market and opened fire, reportedly targeting the mobile money vendor. The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene. Another person caught in the attack was seriously injured and is currently receiving treatment at a health facility.
One eyewitness, Yussif Mohammed, recounted the ordeal, describing how the victim was shot in several parts of the body, including the stomach, neck, and back. He noted that the heavy gunfire caused panic, with some people initially mistaking the situation for a police operation.
He added that traders and passersby fled for safety and stayed away until the attackers had escaped. Business activities were briefly halted as market women and other traders abandoned their stalls to seek shelter.
Residents say the incident highlights growing insecurity in the area and are calling for stronger security presence and patrols.
Police have since visited the scene to begin investigations, and the body of the deceased has been deposited at a mortuary. Authorities say efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the suspects.
