A 36-year-old carpenter, Emmanuel Cudjoe, has reportedly died by suicide while in police custody after being arrested for allegedly defiling his 11-year-old stepdaughter at Ayensudo, a suburb of Elmina in the Komenda Edina Eguafo Municipality of the Central Region.
According to police reports, the suspect was arrested in the early hours of May 10, 2026, at about 5:00 a.m. Later that morning, around 11:00 a.m., officers at the Agyei Krom Police Station were alerted by the station’s counter NCO that the suspect had hanged himself in the cell.
Police indicated that the suspect allegedly used a strip of cloth torn from the edge of a blanket he had been given to sleep with to carry out the act.
Upon receiving the information, the Elmina District Police Command, together with the Regional Crime Scene Management team, proceeded to the station to assess the situation. The team found the suspect’s body hanging against the wall of the cell.
Preliminary observations revealed no visible signs of physical violence on the body. The ligature was firmly fastened around the neck, with the body partially suspended using the torn blanket lining.
The scene was processed by the Crime Scene Management team, after which the body was conveyed to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital. He was pronounced dead on arrival by a medical officer. The remains have since been deposited at the hospital’s morgue pending autopsy.
Police have informed the relatives of the deceased, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
