A 35-year-old man is fighting for his life after suspected landguards launched a violent attack on residents and workers at a government-backed telecommunications project site in Awutu Oshimpo in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region.
The victim, identified as Daniel Larbi, is currently in critical condition at the Swedru Government Hospital after being stabbed during the incident.
According to residents, the community has long struggled with poor mobile network coverage, prompting efforts to improve connectivity. The Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Gizella Agbotui Tetteh, reportedly secured funding for the construction of a telecommunications tower to address the issue.
Construction of the project began with strong support from residents, local authorities, and traditional leaders, including the Odikro, who mobilized communal labor.
However, the situation took a violent turn when about 30 men, suspected to be landguards and riding on 10 motorbikes, stormed the site and demanded an immediate halt to the project.
Eyewitnesses say residents resisted the demand, insisting the project was a government initiative meant to benefit the entire community. The confrontation quickly escalated into chaos, with the attackers allegedly assaulting several people, including elderly residents.
Daniel Larbi was stabbed during the clash, leaving him in critical condition.
The attack has left the community in fear, with reports of threats that the assailants may return.
The Chief of Awutu Oshimpo, Nai Okogyeman Oshimpo, has condemned the incident and called on the Inspector General of Police, the Interior Minister, and President John Dramani Mahama to intervene and ensure justice is served.
Police have since launched an investigation into the incident, but no arrests have been made so far.
