Health Ministry Sets Up Committee to Probe Alleged Medical “Kalabule” at Korle Bu, Ridge

The Ministry of Health has inaugurated a seven-member Investigation Committee to probe allegations of unethical medical practices, popularly described as “medical kalabule,” at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge).

The committee was constituted by the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, MP, following growing public concern over alleged unauthorized and unethical practices within the two major health facilities.

The Investigation Committee is chaired by Alhaji Dr. (Pharm) Inua Yusuf, Esq., Head and Director of Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Health.

Other members of the committee include:

Dr. Eric Kofi Ngyedu, Chief Executive Officer of the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital and Dean of CEOs for Teaching Hospitals

Dr. Adam Abass, Neurosurgeon at Tamale Teaching Hospital and President of the Ghana Academy of Neurosurgeons

Dr. George Sabblah, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Technical Operations) of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), representing the Authority

Dr. Nicholas Adjabu, Biomedical Engineer at the Biomedical Engineering Unit of the Ministry of Health

Dr. Frederick Kwarteng, Representative of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) and Head of the Departments of Trauma and Orthopaedics, and Accident and Emergency at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital

Prof. John Osae-Kwapong, Democracy and Development Fellow at CDD-Ghana, representing Civil Society Organisations (CSOs)

According to the Ministry, the committee’s mandate is to conduct a comprehensive and independent inquiry into the alleged unethical medical practices at the affected hospitals. It is also tasked with assessing the adequacy and effectiveness of existing governance, oversight, and control systems aimed at preventing unauthorized and unethical practices within public health facilities.

The Health Minister has directed the committee to submit its final report and recommendations to the Ministry of Health by February 10, 2026.

In a statement, the Ministry of Health assured the general public of its full cooperation with the committee and reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to upholding ethical standards and restoring public confidence in Ghana’s healthcare delivery system.
