The Ministry of Health has announced that it has obtained financial clearance to pay thousands of health workers undertaking their mandatory service, a move expected to settle outstanding salary arrears and introduce a new monthly payment structure.
In a statement issued on March 13 and signed by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Tony Goodman, the Ministry indicated that the approval from the Ministry of Finance covers the payment of allowances and salaries for 14,279 rotation nurses and midwives, as well as 637 medical and dental house officers nationwide.
According to the statement, the clearance follows extensive consultations between the two ministries aimed at ensuring newly trained health professionals receive the necessary financial support during their mandatory service and professional training.
The Ministry explained that the approval for nurses includes several categories, such as Registered General Nurses, Registered Midwives, Registered Mental Health Nurses, Registered Community Health Nurses, and Registered Public Health Nurses. These personnel began their rotations last year and are expected to complete them this year.
In addition, financial clearance has been granted for the payment of salaries to 637 medical and dental house officers who graduated from both public and private institutions, successfully passed the Medical and Dental Council examinations, and were inducted into service on November 12, 2025.
The Ministry noted that the approvals will clear all outstanding payment arrears from previous years and pave the way for a new policy that ensures monthly payment of allowances for all health professionals undertaking mandatory service.
The statement further indicated that the new arrangement will replace the previous system in which allowances accumulated and were paid at the end of the service period, a practice that particularly affected nurses, pharmacists, and other allied health professionals.
