Government Shifts Strategy in Bawku Conflict from Peacekeeping to Peace Enforcement

The Government of Ghana has announced a major shift in its approach to addressing the long-standing chieftaincy conflict in Bawku, moving from peacekeeping to peace enforcement following a recent escalation of violence in the area.

In a press statement issued on Sunday, July 27, 2025, and signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications and Spokesperson to the President, the government confirmed the deployment of the Ghana Armed Forces to maintain law and order and enforce curfews aimed at safeguarding public safety.

“The Ghana Armed Forces have been deployed to maintain law and order, as we intensify curfews to ensure public safety,” the statement noted. “We assure the public that the Ghana Armed Forces will take all necessary measures to protect lives and property.”

The government also commended the efforts of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, whose mediation, alongside the contributions of the Nayiri and Zugraana, had significantly advanced the peace process until recent killings reversed the gains.

The presidency expressed deep concern that the surge in violence could derail the nearly resolved conflict, emphasizing that drastic measures were now necessary in the interest of the broader public good.

“Government urges all parties to refrain from violence and support the peace process. Residents are advised to fully cooperate with the Ghana Armed Forces to ensure peace,” the statement added.

While acknowledging the inconvenience that this heightened intervention may bring to residents, particularly in the form of enforced curfews and increased security presence, the government reiterated its commitment to restoring calm.

“The Government of Ghana remains committed to restoring peace and stability in Bawku and other affected areas and is taking every necessary measure to ensure the safety and security of all residents, including students,” the statement concluded.

The intervention marks a turning point in the state’s handling of the Bawku conflict and underscores the administration’s resolve to prioritize national security and community stability.
