The Ghana Police Service has arrested four suspected members of a notorious carjacking syndicate operating in Kumasi and other parts of the country, following investigations into the robbery and killing of Mr. Andrews Amankwah.
According to a press release issued by the Ashanti Regional Police Command on February 24, 2026, the suspects were picked up in separate intelligence-led operations carried out between February 18 and 22 across Kumasi.
The arrests form part of investigations into the fatal robbery that occurred on February 10, 2026, at Ohwim-Amanfrom in Kumasi.
Police identified the suspects as Akwasi Manu, 47; Bashiru Tanko, also known as “TK,” 33; Kojo Amponsah, alias “Kamakazi,” 35; and Emmanuel Kwame Appiah, alias “Taller,” 38.
Akwasi Manu was arrested for allegedly being in possession of the deceased victim’s Samsung mobile phone, a development police described as a major breakthrough in the case. Bashiru Tanko was arrested at Atonsu and is said to be linked to prior car-snatching incidents. Kojo Amponsah was apprehended at Hwereso near Boankra and is alleged to have provided intelligence linking the syndicate to multiple violent robberies. Emmanuel Kwame Appiah was arrested at Danyame and is believed to have acted as the driver during the fatal robbery.

Police further disclosed that the alleged leader of the group, Eric Antwi Duku, 42, sustained gunshot wounds during a police operation on February 22 and was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
Items retrieved during the operations include a Bruni Mod 84 pistol loaded with eight rounds of ammunition, a tracking detection device, forged vehicle documents, and a Toyota Corolla S, which has since been impounded.
Investigations indicate that the syndicate specialized in stealing Toyota Hilux and Land Cruiser vehicles after conducting surveillance on their targets. The group has reportedly been linked to the Amanfrom robbery, another fatal robbery at Kronum, and several vehicle thefts in Tarkwa and Kumasi.
The suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be arraigned before court soon. The recovered firearm is undergoing forensic and ballistic examination, while efforts continue to apprehend other accomplices.
The Ghana Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling violent criminal networks and urged the public to support law enforcement agencies with credible information.
