The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formally summoned the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa to Ghana, Mr. Thando Dalamba, following renewed concerns over reported xenophobic incidents targeting Ghanaian nationals in South Africa.
The diplomatic engagement, initiated by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP), comes in response to viral videos and eyewitness reports alleging intimidation, harassment, and discriminatory treatment of foreign nationals.
Rising concerns over reported incidents
During the meeting, the Minister cited specific cases, including an incident in the KwaZulu-Natal Province in which a legally resident Ghanaian was allegedly confronted by unidentified individuals, compelled to produce proof of legal residence, and reportedly told to “fix his country.”
The Ministry further noted that emerging reports suggest a growing climate of tension in some communities, prompting advisories for foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, to remain indoors at certain periods for their personal safety.
Historical ties referenced
Honourable Ablakwa underscored the longstanding relations between Ghana and South Africa, referencing Ghana’s historic support for the anti-apartheid struggle and the role of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, in championing African liberation and unity.
He stressed that such incidents, if left unchecked, risk undermining the spirit of Pan-African solidarity and the shared commitment to peaceful coexistence among African states.
Ghana issues formal protest
The Ministry formally registered Ghana’s protest, describing the reported acts as unacceptable and inconsistent with the principles of African unity and mutual respect.
“Africans must not engage in conduct that undermines peaceful coexistence on the continent,” the Minister emphasized, calling for urgent corrective measures.
South African response
In response, Acting High Commissioner Thando Dalamba acknowledged the seriousness of the concerns raised and assured the Ghanaian government that the matter is receiving attention at the highest levels.
He indicated that South African authorities are actively monitoring identified hotspots, with law enforcement agencies deployed to prevent escalation and maintain public order.
Mr. Dalamba further assured that appropriate steps are being taken to investigate the reported incidents and hold any perpetrators accountable under the law.
Commitment to citizen protection
Although no fatalities or major injuries have been recorded in the latest reported incidents, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated its firm commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of Ghanaian nationals residing in South Africa.
The Ministry added that it will continue diplomatic engagements with South African authorities to guarantee sustained protection and prevent further occurrences.
