Firefighter Injured as GNFS Battles Major Blaze at Accra Water Works

A firefighter sustained critical injuries while battling a major fire outbreak at the Accra Water Works area opposite the Accra Central Police Station on Wednesday night.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), firefighters from the Accra City Fire Station responded swiftly after receiving a distress call at 8:05 p.m. The first crew arrived at the scene just two minutes later and found the fire fully developed.

Additional firefighting teams from the Ministries, Parliament, Industrial Area and Circle Fire Stations were deployed to support the operation, alongside a water tanker from the Assembly.

After several hours of intense firefighting, personnel successfully confined the blaze at 10:29 p.m., brought it under control at 11:50 p.m., and fully extinguished it at 3:41 a.m. No fatalities were recorded.

The injured firefighter was rushed to the Police Hospital for treatment and is reported to be in stable condition and responding well to medical care.

The fire caused extensive damage to the Accra Central Police Barracks Annex, destroying 32 rooms and their contents, as well as a one-storey building and its contents.

Despite the severity of the incident, firefighters prevented the flames from spreading to the nearby Ghana Water Limited facility and other adjoining structures, helping to avert further destruction and losses.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
