Ghana’s Trunk Roads “Unfit for Purpose” — Roads Minister

Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has revealed that nearly all trunk roads across the country are currently unfit for purpose, raising concerns about the state of the nation’s road infrastructure and the need for urgent intervention.

Appearing before a parliamentary committee on the economy and development, the Minister stressed the need for improved maintenance beyond current efforts. He identified inadequate funding as a major challenge affecting the sector but assured that the government’s “Big Push” agenda is designed to address these concerns.

According to him, roads constructed under the initiative will meet high standards and are expected to last for at least six years upon completion.

The Minister further disclosed that the Big Push programme will include key projects such as the Cocoa Roads initiative, the Bolgatanga–Bawku–Pulmakom Road Project, and all stalled road projects funded by development partners. These, he noted, are set to begin in the second phase of the programme.

He also emphasized that the government has not terminated any legitimately awarded road contracts under the previous NPP administration, assuring that such projects will continue while new ones are added to accelerate the development of Ghana’s road infrastructure.
