Rev. Wengam Calls for Stronger Support for Health Workers to Achieve Universal Health Coverage

The General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Church, Rev. Stephen Yenusom Wengam, has called for deliberate policies and improved incentives for health workers to help Ghana achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC). He stressed that the country’s goal can only be realized through adequate financing, equity, and effective policy implementation within the health sector.

Speaking at this year’s Annual Health Summit, held under the theme “Building a Resilient Health Workforce to Accelerate the Attainment of Universal Health Coverage,” Rev. Wengam, who chaired the event, highlighted the critical role of health workers in delivering quality care. He noted that without a motivated and well-supported workforce, efforts to achieve UHC would fall short.

He further emphasized the need to strengthen governance within the health system, ensuring proper oversight, coordination, and sustainable financing to guarantee that all citizens have access to essential healthcare services.

Rev. Wengam also expressed concern over the shortage of healthcare professionals, particularly in rural areas. He revealed that in some instances, a single doctor is responsible for more than 25,000 people, describing the situation as a serious threat to healthcare delivery and equitable access.

In response, the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, indicated that government has begun taking steps to address these challenges. He cited ongoing recruitment efforts and improved deployment strategies aimed at ensuring a fair distribution of health workers, especially in underserved communities.
