Weija Dam spillage to resume September 9 as GWL orders residents to evacuate

Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced it will begin spillage at the Weija Dam from Wednesday, 9 September 2026, as water levels approach the dam’s safety threshold, and has ordered residents living downstream to evacuate ahead of the exercise.

In a statement, GWL said the water level at the Weija Dam has risen to 45.2 feet following heavy rains upstream of the dam and continued rainfall in the catchment area of the Densu River and its tributaries. With the level approaching the 46-foot threshold, the utility said it would resume spillage as a precautionary measure to safeguard the dam.

All residents living downstream of the dam have been directed to evacuate the area before any eventuality. GWL urged residents to remain alert, follow official evacuation directives and avoid activities that may expose them to danger.

The company also called on the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the District Assembly, traditional authorities, assembly members, resident associations and other relevant stakeholders to take the necessary precautionary measures and prepare for evacuation.

Communities likely to be affected include, but are not limited to, Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kopey and surrounding communities.

GWL said it was closely monitoring the situation and would continue to provide updates, adding that the safety of residents remained its priority and that public cooperation was essential.

The statement was issued by the Public Relations and Communications Department of Ghana Water Ltd.
