Two Dead, Five Injured in Fatal Crash on Accra–Cape Coast Highway

Two people have been confirmed dead, with five others injured, following a fatal road traffic accident at Third Ridge Junction on the Accra–Cape Coast Highway.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at about 7:00 a.m.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) at the Cape Coast Regional Headquarters responded swiftly to a distress call and arrived to find a Toyota Corolla with registration number GW-5769-16 and a HOWO tipper truck (GN-1497-22) involved in the crash.

Firefighters worked to rescue the driver of the Toyota Corolla, who had been trapped behind the steering wheel. He was extricated and rushed to the hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Eyewitnesses reported that the Corolla was traveling from Cape Coast towards Accra when the driver noticed a pick-up vehicle dangerously overtaking and attempting to merge into the lane of the oncoming tipper truck.

In an effort to avoid a collision, the Corolla driver slowed down. The tipper truck, approaching from the opposite direction, reportedly veered into the outer lane to make way for the overtaking pick-up. However, while attempting to return to its lane, the truck driver lost control and collided head-on with the Corolla.

The Cape Coast Regional Fire Commander, ACFO Merinder Mary Attigah-Mensah, was present at the scene and urged motorists to exercise caution and patience on the road to prevent such tragedies.

All casualties were transported to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital for treatment, while the two bodies have been deposited at the hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
