SSNIT Urges Workers Aged 15–45 to Join Scheme Ahead of 2026 Mobile Service Week

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has called on every worker between the ages of 15 and 45 to join the Scheme to secure a better future, stressing that it provides income security for all workers in Ghana, including the self-employed. The call formed part of pre-event activities ahead of the launch of the 2026 SSNIT Mobile Service Week, scheduled from Monday, October 19 to Friday, October 23, 2026.

As part of the activities, SSNIT embarked on a float through the principal streets of Techiman in the Bono East Region to create public awareness about the upcoming week-long programme. The Area Manager for Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regions, Mr. Alex Appiah, said the Mobile Service Week would involve SSNIT officials moving out of their offices to markets, shops and other business locations to engage clients, especially informal-sector workers and the self-employed who may find it difficult to visit branch offices.

“You realise that SSNIT is a corporate institution and most of the time we are in our offices, but we have decided to step out, go to the markets and shops, and go to the people who may not have the time to come to our offices,” he said.

Mr. Appiah noted that many informal-sector workers and self-employed persons believe SSNIT is meant only for formal-sector employees. He said the float was therefore intended to sensitise them to join the Scheme. “We used to think that SSNIT is only for those in tie, bankers, teachers and doctors, but we are out here today to inform the public that the Scheme is for the informal sector and the self-employed as well,” he stated.

According to him, it is important for every worker aged 15 to 45 to join SSNIT because the Scheme offers unique services that are not available in any other institution.

Mr. Appiah explained that SSNIT provides monthly pensions, invalidity pensions, survivors’ benefits and other contingencies, including support in situations such as accidents, burglary and fire. “Today, you are beautifully employed, you are doing your own business and receiving some income. The question is, if you lose that business, will you survive? It is at that point that SSNIT comes in to pay you until death,” he said.

Speaking after the float, Mr. Appiah described the exercise as eye-opening, saying members of the public raised several concerns that need to be addressed to improve customer service. He said SSNIT needs to undertake more of such engagements to give customers the opportunity to voice their challenges and receive the needed support.

“This exercise has been very revealing. When you are in the office, you think that is all, but this time we are dealing with the informal sector, who hardly leave where they sell their wares to come to the office. Today, as we engage them, we realise we need to do more of this,” he added.

The 2026 SSNIT Mobile Service Week will be held from October 19 to October 23 under the theme: “Enhancing Service through Digital Transformation.”

The initiative is expected to bring SSNIT services closer to workers, particularly those in the informal sector, while promoting the use of digital channels for easier access to social security services.
