The Western Central Regional Police Command has commenced investigations into an explosion that occurred at a tailings site in Aboso, near Tarkwa, on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.
The incident resulted in the death of three people, while three others sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.
According to the Police, preliminary investigations indicate that workers at the site spotted a python and informed the owner of the facility, David Kofi Fletcher, who is now deceased.
The Police said Mr Fletcher reportedly arrived at the site with a pump-action shotgun to kill the reptile, and it is suspected that after firing a shot, the pellets hit explosive materials believed to have been illegally stored at the premises, triggering the explosion.
The explosion also caused extensive damage to nearby properties, with several houses within the vicinity recording shattered window panes.
Additionally, six vehicles parked at a nearby washing bay had their windscreens and windows damaged as a result of the impact.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 5, the Western Central Regional Police Command expressed its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and confirmed that the bodies of the deceased have been transported to the morgue.
“The Minerals Commission has been notified and is collaborating with the Police as investigations continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. The Command further reminds the public that the unlawful possession, storage, handling, or sale of explosives constitutes a serious offence and poses significant risks to public safety.
“Members of the public are urged to report any suspected illegal storage or handling of explosives to the nearest Police Station,” the statement added.
