OSP investigates alleged vote buying in NPP and NDC primaries

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has commenced investigations into alleged electoral malpractices during recent internal party elections of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In a public notice dated February 8, 2026, the OSP announced that it has opened investigations into the NPP presidential primaries held on January 31, 2026. The investigations are examining allegations of vote buying, vote selling, and the sources of funds used to finance the alleged corrupt practices.

Additionally, the OSP disclosed that on February 7, 2026, it commenced real-time investigations into the NDC parliamentary primaries conducted in the Ayawaso East Constituency.

According to the OSP, during the conduct of the NDC primaries, one of the parliamentary candidates, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, allegedly abetted thugs to physically assault an officer of the Office who was serving him with an investigative directive in relation to alleged vote buying and vote selling.

As a result of the incident, the OSP says it has opened further investigations into the alleged assault of its authorised officer, which occurred in the course of the officer’s lawful duties.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor has reiterated that the law strictly prohibits corrupt practices in relation to public elections, stressing that vote buying, vote selling, intimidation, threats, and acts of violence constitute serious criminal offences.

The OSP has therefore cautioned political actors and the general public to adhere strictly to electoral laws as investigations into the alleged infractions continue.
