The National Peace Council (NPC) has called for calm and restraint nationwide following a rise in political tensions linked to the recent arrest of several political figures over alleged breaches of national laws relating to public comments.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, the statutory body established under Act 818 to prevent, manage, and resolve conflicts expressed concern over the prevailing political atmosphere.
Reaffirming the importance of the rule of law, due process, and constitutional freedoms under the 1992 Constitution, the Council stressed that these remain fundamental to Ghana’s democratic governance.
The NPC urged media practitioners, political actors, and the general public to exercise restraint and responsibility in their public engagements, cautioning against inflammatory rhetoric and conduct that could heighten tensions.
It noted that national stability depends on the ability of citizens to express differing views without resorting to insults or violence, and called for civility in public discourse.
The Council also directed state security and judicial institutions to act with impartiality, transparency, and professionalism in the discharge of their duties while safeguarding the rights and freedoms of all citizens.
Political parties and communicators were further urged to avoid unverified and inflammatory statements capable of inciting unrest, while Ghanaian commentators abroad were advised to remain mindful of the impact of their remarks on national cohesion.
To prevent further escalation, the NPC announced plans to convene an emergency engagement under its trust-building framework in the coming days, bringing together political party leadership to address emerging tensions.
It concluded by emphasizing that sustaining peace is a shared responsibility, urging all Ghanaians to place national stability above partisan considerations.
