Marked section of Kasoa Old Market demolished to pave way for redevelopment

The Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly, in collaboration with a joint security taskforce, has demolished a designated section of the Kasoa Old Market as part of a major redevelopment drive aimed at improving commercial infrastructure in the area.

The operation, carried out with support from the military, police, immigration officers and the Assembly’s taskforce, followed earlier eviction notices served to traders within the affected zone. Authorities maintained that the demolition exercise targeted only the portion of the market that had been officially marked for redevelopment.

The move comes after a March 27 deadline given to traders to vacate the area. While some traders failed to comply, the Assembly granted a temporary extension to allow business activities during the Easter period. With the extension elapsed, officials proceeded to clear the structures to make way for the project.

The Assembly has assured affected traders that alternative trading spaces have been provided at the Kasoa Iron City Market, where they are expected to relocate and continue their businesses.

Speaking to the media after the exercise, a member of the Assembly’s engineering team, Abdul Mohammed Rahman, who spoke on behalf of the Municipal Chief Executive, described the demolition as a crucial step toward modernising market facilities and enhancing trading conditions in the municipality.

He added that the Assembly engaged traders, traditional authorities and other key stakeholders extensively before undertaking the exercise.
