Landlords of Tendamba Primary and Kindergarten School in Wa Sokpayiri have opposed plans to demolish the 70-year-old school to make way for a 24-hour economy market. Spokesperson Ibrahim Abu Sunkar said such a move would disrupt teaching and learning, inconvenience pupils, and compromise their safety, as they would have to travel farther for education.
At a press conference on Tuesday, February 10, Abu Sunkar expressed concern that the community, as landowners, was not consulted before the decision. He emphasized that while residents support development projects, the choice of land for the market is inappropriate.
The community has proposed alternative sites and is calling for the renovation and upgrading of the school to meet modern standards, improve infrastructure, attract enrollment, and ensure pupil safety.
Established in 1956, Tendamba Primary and Kindergarten is one of the historical institutions in the Upper West Region, and the community’s resistance underscores a commitment to preserving its educational legacy.
