Bono East Electoral Commissioner Urges NPP and NDC to Draw Lessons from NPP Presidential Primaries

The Bono East Regional Electoral Commissioner, Gabriel Dei Yeboah, has called on the country’s two main political parties—the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC)—to draw lessons from the peaceful conduct of the NPP presidential primaries held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

Speaking after the exercise, Mr. Dei Yeboah commended the violence-free process, describing it as clear evidence that Ghana is capable of organizing peaceful elections. He stressed that electoral violence is not inherent to any region but is rather a result of human actions, noting that restraint and responsible conduct by all stakeholders can ensure peaceful polls nationwide.

He rated the overall conduct of the primaries at 98 per cent, citing the absence of major challenges across the region.

“What I have learnt is that human beings create violence; no region or district is violent on its own. What we witnessed today shows that we can conduct peaceful elections in any part of the country,” he said, urging both major parties to emulate the example set during the primaries.

The New Patriotic Party conducted its presidential primaries across 276 constituencies nationwide, with voting taking place in 11 constituencies in the Bono East Region.

In the regional results, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emerged as the leading candidate, securing 5,049 votes, representing approximately 69 per cent of the total valid votes cast. Dr. Bryan Acheampong, former Minister for Food and Agriculture, placed second with 1,391 votes, while Kennedy Ohene Agyapong obtained 828 votes. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum garnered 58 votes, and Kwabena Agyei Agyapong recorded 13 votes.

A total of 7,359 valid votes were cast in the Bono East Region.
