Gov’t Rolls Out GHS1,300 Monthly Allowance for Assembly Members to Boost Local Governance

The government has officially officially rolled out a monthly allowance of GHS 1,300 for Assembly Members across the country to boost local governance and project monitoring under the Resetting Ghana Agenda.

At a press briefing held on Monday, July 14, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, revealed that each Assembly Member—both elected and appointed—will now receive GHS1,300 per month. This new initiative, captured in the 2025 Budget, is aimed at empowering grassroots leaders with the financial backing needed to effectively carry out their roles.

According to the Minister, the Ministry of Finance has already released GHS25 million, out of which GHS23.6 million has been used to cover allowances for April and May. In total, 9,085 Assembly Members are expected to benefit from the GHS100 million allocation earmarked for the year.

The Minister emphasized that the allowance will support Assembly Members in tracking and evaluating government projects tied to the ruling party’s development agenda.
