Gov’t Releases First-Quarter Allowances for Traditional Leaders

The Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, has announced that the government has released first-quarter allowances for traditional leaders nationwide. Subsequently, payments for the second quarter are expected soon.

She made this announcement at the launch of the 2025 Ghana Chieftaincy Awards in Accra on July 17, 2025. According to Deputy Minister Sowah, paying these allowances is part of the government’s efforts to empower traditional leaders to make a meaningful impact in their communities beyond ceremonial roles.

She commended the awards organizers for recognizing traditional leadership’s vital role in national development and urged Ghanaians to respect their cultural heritage.

In her words, “These awards must ignite a deeper national conversation: How do we harness the moral authority, cultural wisdom, and strategic position of our traditional leaders to shape a better Ghana? How do we empower them in meaningful ways—not only for ceremony but to drive real impact?”

The Deputy Minister also noted that “the government has ensured that the first-quarter allowances for traditional leaders have been duly disbursed.”
