Customers in parts of Greater Accra and the Eastern Region are expected to experience temporary water supply interruptions from Thursday, August 6, to Saturday, August 8, 2026, as Ghana Water Limited (GWL) undertakes planned maintenance works on the Kpong-Tema transmission pipelines.
According to the company, the exercise will involve the isolation and replacement of weakened sections of the 21-inch and 42-inch transmission pipelines between Kpong and Tema as part of efforts to improve the reliability, efficiency and sustainability of water supply.
GWL said routine engineering assessments identified more than 300 metres of deteriorated pipeline sections requiring urgent replacement to prevent major pipeline failures, reduce water losses and ensure a more reliable water supply.
To facilitate the maintenance works, the Kpong Water Treatment Plant will be temporarily shut down while five sections of the transmission pipelines are isolated for replacement. As a result, customers served by the Kpong Water Supply System are expected to experience water supply interruptions and reduced water pressure throughout the maintenance period.
Areas expected to be affected include Gbetsile, Ashaiman, Katamanso, Zenu, Atadeka, Afienya, Appolonia, Prampram, Kpone, Dawhenya, all communities within the Tema Metropolis, Spintex, Baatsona, Sakumono, Nungua, Teshie, as well as Kpong, Akuse, Somanya, Atimpoku and surrounding communities.
Ghana Water assured the public that its engineers and technical teams will work around the clock throughout the three-day period to complete the replacement works on schedule and restore normal water supply as quickly as possible.
The company has advised affected customers to store adequate quantities of water ahead of the maintenance exercise and use available supplies judiciously during the period. It also urged hospitals, health facilities and other essential service providers to make the necessary contingency arrangements, adding that water tankers will be deployed to support selected critical institutions where feasible.
GWL described the maintenance works as a critical investment in safeguarding one of the country’s strategic water transmission systems, noting that replacing the deteriorated pipeline sections will significantly reduce pipeline bursts, minimise emergency shutdowns, improve operational efficiency and enhance the long-term reliability of water supply, particularly to Tema and communities along the eastern corridor of the Greater Accra Region.
The company says it will provide regular updates on the progress of the maintenance works through its official communication channels and notify the public immediately normal water supply is fully restored.
