Ghana to host global conference on reparatory justice in June 2026

Ghana will host a High-Level “Next Steps” Conference on Reparatory Justice from June 17 to 19, 2026, in a move aimed at advancing the global reparations agenda following a landmark resolution by the United Nations General Assembly on the trans-Atlantic enslavement of Africans.

The conference, to be held under the auspices of John Dramani Mahama, is expected to bring together heads of state, ministers, legal experts, historians, and civil society actors to deliberate on concrete steps toward achieving reparatory justice.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ghana indicated that the meeting follows the adoption of a historic UN resolution which declared the trans-Atlantic trafficking and enslavement of Africans as one of the gravest crimes against humanity. The resolution garnered broad international support, with 123 member states voting in favour.

According to the ministry, the upcoming conference will provide a platform for participating countries and global stakeholders to translate the resolution into a coordinated and actionable framework. Discussions are expected to focus on developing policy approaches, institutional mechanisms, and a unified outcome document to guide sustained global engagement on reparatory justice.

As part of the programme, a maiden Juneteenth commemoration will be held at Christiansborg Castle in Osu. The event will reflect on the historical legacy of trans-Atlantic enslavement while promoting dialogue on remembrance, healing, and justice. It is also expected to deepen collaboration among African states, the diaspora, and international partners.

The ministry noted that the conference is expected to strengthen Africa’s collective voice on reparatory justice and help shape a more unified global position on the issue.

Authorities say preparations are underway to welcome participants to Accra for what is being described as a defining moment in the global push for reparations.

Further details on registration, participation, and accreditation are available on the ministry’s reparations portal, while media enquiries can be directed to its communications office.
