The Kingdom of Dagbon has been thrown into a state of mourning following the official announcement of the passing of Yaa Naa Abukari II, the Overlord of the Dagbon Traditional Area. The King, who was enskinned in January 2019, was officially declared dead after the performance of the customary rites by the royal drummers and warriors in accordance with the customs and traditions of the Dagbon Kingdom.
During his reign, Yaa Naa Abukari II was widely celebrated for promoting peace, unity, and stability across Dagbon. He championed efforts to amend the Dagbon Constitution to reflect contemporary governance needs and ensure a smooth transition of traditional authority. He also oversaw the redevelopment of the Gbewaa Palace, an ultramodern facility that is nearing completion, alongside several other development initiatives within the traditional area.
Following the announcement of his passing, his eldest son was enskinned as Kampakuya Naa Yakubu to serve as Regent. In line with Dagbon custom, he will oversee the affairs of the kingdom until the traditional processes leading to the enskinment of a new Yaa Naa are completed.
The passing of Yaa Naa Abukari II marks the end of a reign remembered for reconciliation, development, and the strengthening of traditional governance. As Dagbon mourns its revered King, tributes continue to pour in from traditional authorities, government officials, and members of the public, who have described him as a unifying leader whose legacy will endure for generations.
