Two Dead, One Fighting for Life After Galamsey Pit Collapse at Assin Dansame

Two persons have been confirmed dead, with one other in critical condition, following the collapse of an illegal mining (galamsey) pit at Assin Dansame in the Assin North District of the Central Region.

The incident occurred around 1:00 p.m. on Thursday when eight miners were working in a newly dug pit. Reports indicate that the walls of the pit suddenly gave way, trapping three miners under heaps of loose soil and debris.

Residents and fellow miners launched a rescue operation but encountered challenges due to the unstable nature of the terrain and the depth of the collapse. After several minutes of effort, the trapped individuals were eventually pulled from the rubble.

One of the victims survived and was rushed to a nearby health facility, where medical personnel say he remains in critical condition, receiving emergency treatment for multiple injuries.

The deceased, a 22-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man, have been deposited at the New Edubiase Government Hospital morgue.

Police have since launched an investigation into the incident. Meanwhile, the Assin North District Director of NADMO, Edward Fireson, has issued a warning to individuals involved in illegal mining in the area, stressing that efforts are being intensified to clamp down on their activities.
