Ghana Water Company urges residents of Tamale to pay bills and avoid illegal connections.

The Northern Regional Manager of Ghana Water Company Limited, Stephen Amihire Mensah, has appealed to residents in the region to pay their bills and avoid illegal connections for the effective operation of the company.

Speaking at a stakeholder engagement in Tamale to commemorate this year’s World Water Day, marked annually on March 22, the Northern Regional Manager of the Ghana Water Company Limited, Stephen Amihire Mensah, highlighted the company’s operational challenges, including the over GH¢50 million debt owed by customers and the 52% production losses recorded in 2025 due to illegal connections. He emphasised that these issues continue to hinder efficient service delivery.

“The areas are building up over 50 million areas are being owed and again the illegal connections I can tell you for sure, for 2025, 52% of our production could not be accounted for so imagine with all this water scarcity in Tamale, we produce the water and you can not find 52%” he said.

He therefore reiterated the need for residents to honour their financial obligations and refrain from illegal connections to help improve water supply services in the region. “Every investor wants to get a return on the investment so if the person comes and find out that 52% of your water produced goes to waste and this illegal connections are rampant, everyone will fill reluctant to invest in infrastructure so we are appealing to them that they should pay their water bill and refrain from illegal connections for improved service delivery ” he stated.

Stephen Amihire Mensah stressed that the presence of water scarcity in the region is taking a heavy toll, particularly on women and children, who often travel long distances to access water, thereby disrupting their daily activities. He added that the theme for this year’s celebration, “Water and Gender,” with the slogan “Where water flows, equality grows,” reflects the situation in the region.
