Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection Gives Update on Abandoned Newborn Found in Elmina

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has provided an update on the newborn baby who was found abandoned near Bronyibima Estate in Elmina in the Central Region.

In a statement dated February 19, 2026, the Ministry said the baby, believed to be approximately one day old at the time of discovery, is currently receiving medical care and is reported to be in stable condition.

Officials from the Department of Social Welfare have taken temporary custody of the child to ensure her safety. The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare, is continuing investigations to identify and locate the baby’s mother or any close relatives.

MoGCSP assured the public that the baby’s well-being remains a top priority, adding that appropriate arrangements have been made to ensure she is properly cared for while efforts to trace her family continue.

The Ministry commended members of the community who rescued the baby and appealed to anyone with relevant information to assist with the ongoing investigation. It also urged parents or guardians facing challenges, particularly in cases of unplanned or crisis pregnancies, to seek support through appropriate social welfare services.

Members of the public are encouraged to contact the Ministry’s Helpline of Hope Call Centre on its toll-free lines — 0800-800-800 or 0800-900-900 — for support, guidance, or to report information that may help protect children and vulnerable persons.

The Ministry emphasized that child abandonment is a serious violation of children’s rights and reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of all children.
