A former Parliamentary Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ablekuma West, Cobby Mensah, has accused the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), George Kpakpo Allotey, and the Member of Parliament (MP), Kweku Addo, of leading a political witch-hunt aimed at collapsing his business. He alleges that the two are using the authority of the Municipal Assembly to deliberately target his investments because he is perceived as a potential threat in future parliamentary primaries.
Speaking to journalists, Cobby Mensah said individuals purportedly aligned with some powerful political actors confronted him at his business premises and warned him to stay away from issues relating to certain government properties. He claimed he has since received several threats, which he formally reported to the constituency chairman and other senior party figures, but no concrete action has been taken to address his concerns.
The former aspirant, who described himself as a loyal and dedicated member of the NDC, recounted years of financial and logistical support to the party and its candidates at both local and national levels. He said it was therefore disheartening that under an NDC-led administration, his businesses were allegedly being targeted instead of being protected and encouraged.
Cobby Mensah further alleged that the Ablekuma West Municipal Assembly recently carried out a demolition exercise that affected structures belonging to him. He described the action as “deliberate and politically motivated”, insisting it formed part of a broader plan to intimidate and sideline him ahead of the next NDC parliamentary primaries in the constituency.
According to him, the manner in which the exercise was conducted and the choice of properties affected, reinforced his belief that he was being singled out for victimisation.
He revealed that after reporting the matter to the constituency leadership without results, he escalated his complaints to some national executives of the NDC in an attempt to resolve the issue internally. However, he noted that all efforts to seek redress within the party structures had so far yielded no meaningful outcome.
Frustrated by the seeming inaction, Cobby Mensah has issued an ultimatum to the party leadership, demanding that his concerns be addressed by Friday, failing which he has vowed to publicly announce his next course of action.
Meanwhile, in an earlier engagement with the media, the MCE for Ablekuma West, George Kpakpo Allotey, dismissed the allegations and denied masterminding any political witch-hunt against Cobby Mensah. He maintained that the recent demolitions carried out by the Assembly were lawful, targeting unauthorised and illegally sited structures whose owners had been duly served with prior notices to remove them.
According to the MCE, the exercise formed part of routine enforcement of municipal bylaws aimed at sanitising the local planning regime and protecting waterways and public spaces, not a scheme to settle political scores. He stressed that the Assembly would continue to implement its mandate without fear or favour, regardless of the political identities of affected persons.
