Ghana Health Service Warns of Rising Seasonal Influenza Cases

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has issued a public alert over a surge in seasonal influenza cases across parts of the country, urging citizens to take preventive measures to help curb the spread.

According to a statement signed by the Acting Director-General, Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, the cases have been confirmed as Influenza A strains H3N2 and H1N1, which are part of the seasonal flu viruses. The most affected areas include the Greater Accra, Central, Bono, and Eastern Regions.

Dr. Akoriyea noted that the increase in reported cases coincides with Ghana’s annual flu season, which typically peaks during the cooler months.

“The symptoms of seasonal flu include sudden onset of fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, headache, and fatigue. The spread is mainly through respiratory droplets from infected persons and by touching contaminated surfaces,” the statement read.

Groups at Risk

The GHS identified the following groups as being most vulnerable:

Children and adolescents, especially those in school

The elderly

Pregnant women

People with chronic illnesses such as asthma, diabetes, and heart disease

High-risk environments include schools, dormitories, transport terminals, and markets — places where crowding makes rapid transmission more likely.

Preventive Measures

The Health Service has advised the public to:

Seek early medical care for flu-like symptoms.

Stay home when unwell to prevent spreading the infection.

Maintain good hygiene by washing hands regularly and covering coughs or sneezes.

Avoid crowded areas and close contact with sick individuals.

Use face masks in crowded public places.

Government Response

The Ghana Health Service has intensified surveillance and rapid diagnostic testing at health facilities, updated case management protocols, and launched a public education campaign through media and community channels.

Dr. Akoriyea also called on school authorities, parents, and students to observe strict flu prevention measures as schools reopen across the country.

“The Ministry of Health through the Ghana Health Service assures the public that all necessary measures are being taken to contain these flu cases. Cooperation from stakeholders is vital in protecting yourself, your family, and your community,” the statement concluded.
