Upper West Police arrest a woman for abducting a one-week-old baby at the Wa market

The Upper West Regional Police Command has arrested a 38-year-old woman, Abena Martha Maanibeh, for allegedly stealing a one-week-old baby and other valuables belonging to the baby’s mother at the Wa Market, popularly known as Kejetia.

According to police reports, the complainant, Kwofie Mwinbelle, gave birth to a baby boy at the Wa Regional Hospital on August 1, this year, where the suspect was serving as a caretaker for another patient. On August 10, under the pretense of assisting the new mother, the suspect lured her to the Wa Market to purchase baby diapers.

She then took advantage of the situation to abscond with the infant and the mother’s handbag containing a mobile phone, cash, and other personal belongings.

Swift investigations by the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU), led by ASP Stella Atukwia, resulted in the suspect’s arrest on August 15 at her hideout in Nuobollie in the Savannah Region.

The stolen baby was rescued unharmed and reunited with the mother, while some of the stolen items were also retrieved. Maanibeh was arraigned before the Wa District Magistrate Court on Monday, August 18, and remanded into custody and is expected to reappear in court on September 2, 2025.

The Upper West Regional Police Command has assured the public of its continued commitment to protecting lives and property, while also commending residents for their vigilance and support, which contributed to the successful arrest.
