Manchester United have officially confirmed that Jadon Sancho will depart the club as a free agent following the expiration of his contract. The winger, who arrived with world-class expectations, leaves Old Trafford after a turbulent period that saw him fail to replicate the scintillating form that made him a star in the Bundesliga.

End of the road for SanchoThe Red Devils have confirmed their retained list has been sent to the Premier League, signalling the end of several high-profile careers in Manchester. Sancho’s exit marks the conclusion of a saga that cost United upwards of £73 million. It proved to be a remarkably costly misfire, with the winger only managed 12 goals and six assists across 83 appearances while consistently struggling for form and finding himself at odds with previous management.

After a series of loan spells at Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, and Aston Villa, the 26-year-old will now look for a fresh start elsewhere. The club issued a brief statement acknowledging the departure of the forward alongside other senior stars. “Everyone at the club would like to thank Casemiro, Tyrell [Malacia], and Jadon for their contributions to Manchester United and wish them the very best of luck for the future,” United confirmed as they prepares for a squad overhaul ahead of the new campaign. Sancho’s time at Old Trafford has been heavily criticised by former players, with Louis Saha notably describing the 26-year-old as “the most disappointing signing in Manchester United history”. Saha expressed his bewilderment at Sancho’s inability to perform in England, stating: “The level he had shown at Borussia Dortmund before joining, he showed so much promise because he is an enormous talent. It felt like a mystery.”

The Frenchman further lamented the missed opportunities during the winger’s tenure, adding: “I was really privileged to be a football player and I was injured a lot and I wish I could have played the amount of games that Sancho has played at his age and with his talent. I would have really loved him to thrive at Old Trafford because he can do everything. He can do amazing things and so it’s a pity to see all those games wasted.”

The Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team has arrested 74 individuals in two separate intelligence-led operations targeting drug trafficking, violent crime, and other illegal activities in the Upper East Region.

The first operation was carried out on May 20, 2026, at Paga, within the Ghana–Burkina Faso border buffer zone. During the exercise, 40 suspects—28 men and 12 women—were apprehended. Among them were 23 Ghanaians, 8 Nigerians, 6 Burkinabés, one Malian, and one Togolese. Security officials also seized several parcels and sacks of suspected narcotics, along with five motorbikes believed to have been used in distribution.

A second operation followed on May 22, 2026, targeting known criminal hotspots within the Navrongo Municipality, including the Condemned Road Corridor, the “After Six” area, and the “Lighter Inn” location. This exercise led to the arrest of 34 suspects, made up of 32 men and 2 women. Police recovered 11 motorbikes, quantities of suspected narcotic substances, and a number of foreign-manufactured cigarettes.

On the same day, all suspects were arraigned before High Court Two, presided over by Justice Ernest Pascal Gemadzie. Sixteen of them were remanded into police custody and are expected to reappear in court on June 4, 2026, while the remaining 22 are currently undergoing profiling for further legal action.

Police say all suspects remain in custody assisting with investigations, as efforts continue to track down other individuals linked to criminal activities in the affected areas.

Residents of a family house near the Ashaiman traffic light in Old Tulaku were left stranded early Tuesday morning following a demolition exercise allegedly carried out by the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA).

The affected property, a one-plot family house, was home to more than 60 occupants, including women and children. Eyewitnesses say the residents were still asleep when a task force, accompanied by an earth-moving machine, arrived unannounced and began demolishing the structure.

According to preliminary checks, the wooden structure stood on land reportedly acquired over a century ago from the Ashaiman Traditional Authority by the Duga family, who are the current occupants.

Speaking to the media, the head of the Duga family, Esther Duga, described the demolition as unjustified and inhumane. She insisted that the land is not under dispute and questioned the Assembly’s decision to carry out such an exercise without prior notice.

“The action of the Assembly is uncalled for. There has been no dispute over this land, and the manner in which this demolition was carried out shows a lack of sensitivity,” she stated.

Several displaced occupants have since recounted their losses, noting that personal belongings were destroyed in the process.

The Assembly Member for the Old Tulaku Electoral Area, Mohammed Yakuba, also expressed disappointment over the incident, criticizing the Municipal Assembly’s approach to the situation.

The Embassy of Ghana, Doha has issued a security advisory urging all Ghanaians living in Qatar to remain indoors and take shelter until further notice following heightened tensions in the region.

In an official release dated February 28, 2026, the Embassy cited a recent missile attack and its impact in Doha as the basis for the alert. It advised Ghanaian nationals to rely only on verified and official sources for updates and information.

The Embassy further urged citizens to stay away from military sites, avoid crowded areas, and minimise unnecessary movement to reduce exposure to potential danger. Ghanaians were also encouraged to keep essential supplies, including medication and food, readily available.

For emergency assistance, the Embassy provided the following contacts: +974 44 36 44 86 or +974 70 13 62 81. Citizens may also reach the mission via email at doha@mfa.gov.gh.

The Embassy reiterated its commitment to the safety and welfare of Ghanaian nationals in Qatar and assured the community that it continues to monitor the situation closely.

The Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) has announced plans for an industrial action following what it described as government inaction on the implementation of a unique salary structure and improved conditions of service for civil and local government staff.

In a press statement released on Thursday, February 19, 2026, the National Executive Council (NEC) of CLOGSAG outlined the protracted history of negotiations on the issue, which began in 2019 and culminated in the signing of two separate Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs).

Despite repeated reminders to the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), the NEC noted that the government has failed to respond or implement the agreed measures, which were to take effect from January 1, 2025.

The NEC expressed concern that staff of the Civil Service and Local Government Service are being “taken for granted” as a result of the government’s failure to honour its commitments.

In response, the council has declared industrial action to press for the demands of its members.

CLOGSAG has further warned that, should the government continue to disregard the agreements, the association’s constituents will embark on a nationwide strike starting March 9, 2026.

“NEC decided further that should the government fail to honour its side of the bargain, the constituents of CLOGSAG would embark on a nationwide strike with effect from 9th March 2026,” the statement concluded.

The Tema Regional Police Command has intercepted a truck loaded with more than 3,000 slabs of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs and arrested two men for allegedly attempting to bribe police officers.

According to a press release issued by the Public Affairs Unit of the Regional Police Headquarters in Tema on February 18, 2026, the interception took place in the early hours of February 15, 2026, at about 12:10 a.m.

Police said an intelligence-led operation by officers of the Regional Patrols Unit led to the interception of a Sinotruck tipper truck, registration number GN 993-14, at Sege Akpla Manya in the Greater Accra Region.

The truck, which was carrying fertilizer sacks, was found to contain 3,009 slabs of plant material suspected to be cannabis. On sighting the police, the driver reportedly abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene.

The vehicle and its contents have since been impounded at the Tema Regional Police Headquarters to support ongoing investigations, while efforts are underway to arrest the driver and determine the ownership of the truck.

In a related development, police disclosed that on February 16, 2026, at about 7:10 p.m., two suspects, Victor Asigbey, 40, and Peter Asigbey, 35, were arrested for allegedly attempting to bribe officers at the Regional CID Office in Tema.

The suspects allegedly offered GH¢150,000 in an attempt to influence officers to release the impounded truck and the suspected narcotics. The money has been retrieved and kept as evidence.

Both suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations and are expected to appear before court on February 18, 2026. The Tema Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to tackling narcotics-related offences and maintaining integrity in the discharge of its duties.

Agriculture Minister Eric Opoku has assured that adequate food will be made available to Ghanaians at risk of hunger. He stated that once the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) provides detailed information on the locations and number of affected individuals, his ministry will take steps to ensure their needs are met.

The minister made the remarks on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday in response to a question from former Lands and Natural Resources Minister Abdulai Jinapor, who inquired about measures taken to support those identified by the GSS as vulnerable to food insecurity.

The latest Quarterly Food Insecurity Report by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) shows that 12.5 million Ghanaians faced food insecurity in the third quarter of 2025, a slight improvement from 13.4 million in the previous quarter. National prevalence rose from 35.3% in Q1 2024 to 38.1% in Q3 2025, peaking at 41.1% in Q2 2025.

Government Statistician Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu stressed that food insecurity affects not just households but national development, business confidence, child health, and overall productivity. The report highlights persistent gender gaps, with female-headed households more affected, and regional disparities, with Upper West recording the highest prevalence at 55.9% and Oti the lowest at 18.4%.

Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister Eric Opoku has assured that once the GSS provides detailed locations of affected Ghanaians, his ministry would ensure the timely provision of adequate food to support vulnerable populations.

At a press conference on Tuesday, February 10, Abu Sunkar expressed concern that the community, as landowners, was not consulted before the decision. He emphasized that while residents support development projects, the choice of land for the market is inappropriate.

The community has proposed alternative sites and is calling for the renovation and upgrading of the school to meet modern standards, improve infrastructure, attract enrollment, and ensure pupil safety.

At public forums and community gatherings in cocoa-growing areas such as the Eastern Region, farmers expressed deep frustration with the prolonged non-payment of proceeds from cocoa beans sold to Licensed Buying Companies (LBCs). Many said the delays have forced them into debt, disrupted family finances and left them struggling to pay school fees and meet basic needs.

“I have never seen payment delays this long,” one farmer lamented, noting that some deliveries made months ago remain unpaid despite repeated assurances.

The situation has drawn political attention, with the Minority in Parliament and key lawmakers urging the government and the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) to expedite the release of funds owed to farmers. Lawmakers warned that continued delays not only erode farmers’ livelihoods but also threaten the stability of the cocoa sector and Ghana’s broader economy.

In response, COCOBOD’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Randy Abbey, publicly apologised to farmers for the difficulties they are facing, acknowledging that the board, the Ministry of Finance and the government are working together to resolve the payment challenges.

Dr. Abbey explained that much of the distress stems from liquidity constraints within COCOBOD’s financing system, a situation exacerbated by changes in how cocoa purchases are funded at the international level. Efforts are underway to develop solutions that will ensure farmers receive timely payments and secure the future of the cocoa value chain.

Despite these steps, farmers and stakeholders insist that concrete action must follow assurances, with many warning that delays beyond this season could undermine confidence in Ghana’s cocoa sector — one of the country’s major export pillars and a key source of rural livelihoods.
