The Unseemly Celebration: When Police Officers and Public Officials Go Too Far – Nana Agyei writes

A disturbing trend has emerged in recent times, where police officers and public officials have taken to publicly celebrating the removal or dismissal of senior colleagues, including Inspector-Generals of Police (IGPs). This unbecoming behavior not only undermines the professionalism and integrity of these institutions but also erodes public trust and confidence.

The latest incident, where police officers were seen jubilating over the removal of IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampre,(Footage available on social media) has raised serious questions about the conduct and character of those entrusted with upholding the law and serving the public. While it is understandable that changes in leadership can bring about a sense of relief or optimism, the manner in which this celebration was carried out was unseemly and unacceptable.

The police and public institutions are built on the principles of professionalism, respect, and integrity. Public officials and police officers have a duty to maintain a neutral stance, especially in situations involving personnel changes. Therefore, by publicly celebrating the removal of a senior colleague, these individuals have compromised their professionalism and brought disrepute to their institutions.

Moreover, such behavior creates a toxic work environment, where colleagues are pitted against each other, and the focus shifts from serving the public to personal agendas and power struggles. It also sends a wrong message to the public, who expect their law enforcement agencies and public institutions to be impartial, efficient, and respectful.

In this letter, I as a Journalist and citizen of Ghana, urge police officers and public officials to reflect on their conduct and the impact it has on their institutions and the public. It is essential to maintain a professional demeanor, even in the face of change or uncertainty. The public expects and deserves better from those who serve and protect them.

In conclusion, while change can be necessary and beneficial, the manner in which it is celebrated can be just as important as the change itself. I, therefore, call on police officers and public officials to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, respect, and integrity, even in the most challenging of times.
