The National Communications Authority  (NCA) has issued a Notice of Proposed Licence Amendment to Next-Gen Infraco (NGIC) under Section 14 of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775).

In a press release dated March 4, 2026, the NCA stated that the proposed amendment seeks to remove the 5G exclusivity clause in NGIC’s licence.

According to the Authority, the move is in the public interest and aims to promote competition and innovation in the provision of 5G services, enhance consumer choice and service quality, accelerate nationwide digital transformation, and ensure the optimal and efficient use of spectrum as a national resource.

The NCA explained that, in line with Section 14 of Act 775, the proposed amendment will take effect 90 days from the date of the notice unless otherwise determined after considering any representations made by the licensee within the statutory notice period.

The Authority assured the public that the proposed amendment follows due process and aligns with its mandate to regulate communications services in a manner that safeguards the national interest.

“The NCA assures the general public that the proposed amendment follows due process and is consistent with the Authority’s mandate to regulate communications services in a manner that safeguards the national interest,” the statement said.

In a related development, the NCA disclosed that NGIC has installed 49 5G sites across the country. Of these, 43 are located in the Greater Accra Region, two in the Ashanti Region, and one each in the Western, Northern, Bono and Central regions.

The Authority also noted that NGIC is in default of its licence fee instalment payment under the Schedule of Licence Fee Payments forming part of its licence conditions.

It said the matter is being addressed in accordance with the applicable licence conditions and statutory provisions.

The NCA reaffirmed its commitment to transparent, fair and predictable regulation to ensure sustainable investment, competition and growth in Ghana’s communications sector.

Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has announced Cabinet approval of Ghana’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy.

The policy framework is designed to build local AI capacity while embedding fairness, transparency and accountability in the deployment of artificial intelligence systems.

Speaking at the Data Protection Conference 2026 in Accra under the theme, “Your Data, Your Identity: Building Trust in Ghana’s Digital Future,” Sam George disclosed that the strategy will be launched in the coming weeks by President John Dramani Mahama.

He added that, government is also developing an Emerging Technologies Framework to ensure responsible regulation of artificial intelligence and other digital platforms.

“The National AI Strategy has been approved by cabinet last week and will be launched in a few weeks by His Excellency. Work is progressing on our Emerging Technologies Framework which will provide structured oversight for Artificial Intelligence systems, advanced analytics, digital assets and new digital platforms.

“The aim is not to slow innovation but to guide it responsibly so that progress remains aligned,” he said.
