The Techiman North Constituency Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Oheneba Appiagyei, has called on the party to prioritize electability and broad appeal in its selection of a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
Speaking on Globe TV’s political talk show “Yese No Sen” with host Nana Agyei on Tuesday, July 29, Mr. Appiagyei stressed that the NPP must field a presidential candidate capable of reaching beyond the party’s traditional base.

“We need a leader who can unite the party and appeal to voters across the political spectrum, someone who can bring in floating voters and even sympathizers from other parties,” he stated.
His remarks come as the NPP officially opens nominations for its flagbearer contest ahead of the January 31, 2026 primaries, a process seen as part of the party’s broader effort to recover and reposition itself following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Following the NPP’s loss in 2024 after two consecutive terms in power, the party has been undergoing internal reflections and strategic assessments. Many within the party view the 2026 primaries as a crucial step in rebranding and rebuilding public trust ahead of the next electoral cycle.
So far, several names have been rumored to be eyeing the flagbearer slot, though formal declarations are yet to be made. The party has pledged to conduct a transparent and fair process to select a candidate who can effectively rally support and reclaim power in 2028.
Responding to growing concerns among party members about alleged attempts by some executives to impose a preferred candidate on the party, Mr. Appiagyei urged caution and independence.

“Delegates must vote with their conscience. They should not allow themselves to be influenced or intimidated by party officials pushing any agenda. The choice of a flagbearer must be based on merit, not manipulation,” he emphasized.
Oheneba Appiagyei’s comments add to a growing chorus of voices urging the party to avoid internal divisions and focus on unity, strategy, and voter confidence in choosing its next leader
