By Nana Agyei|25 February, 2025

In a bid to enhance road safety and mitigate the effects of overloading, the Minister for Roads and Highways, Hon. Kwame Agbodza, has inaugurated a 5-member committee to review the operations of the Axle Load Control Programme.

The committee, comprising representatives from National Security, Private Haulage Operators, the Ghana Highway Authority, the Ministry of Transport, and the Ghana Standards Authority, is tasked with identifying systemic and operational issues, interrogating regulatory violations, evaluating fine management, and providing recommendations for improvement.

Overloading of heavy cargo vehicles has been identified as a major contributor to premature road deterioration and increased traffic accidents. To address this, the Ministry is seeking to reform the Axle Load Control Programme, which faces numerous operational challenges.

The Ministry has assured the public of its commitment to enhancing road safety and mitigating overloading to ensure road pavements fulfill their intended lifespan.

The Axle Load Control Programme was established to control overloading and dimensions of trucks on Ghana’s road network. Its objectives include deterring trucks from operating in overloaded conditions, preserving road design life, improving road safety, and reducing road maintenance costs.
