ROAD TOLLS COMEBACK: Road Minister-designate assures introduction of digital collection system

20 January, 2025

Road tolls are making a comeback in Ghana, but this time, with a modern twist. Road Minister-designate, Kwame Governs Agbodza, told the Vetting Committee on Monday, January 20, 2025, and has assured that a digital collection system will be introduced to make the process more efficient and transparent.
Asked by a member of the Appointment Committee, Shaibu Mahama, about his position on the reintroduction of toll booths in the country, Mr. Agbodza noted “Yes, the road toll is coming back but not in the forms of building obstructions on the road for drivers to stop and for somebody taking monies from them. It will be coming back based on a technological platform that makes it fair, and that makes it easy to collect easy to account for, and for the public to know what that money is actually being used for”.
This move is part of the government’s efforts to leverage technology to improve revenue collection and management. The digital platform will ensure that tolls are collected fairly and accurately and that the revenue generated is accounted for and utilized effectively.

The introduction of a digital collection system is also expected to reduce congestion and minimize the hassle associated with traditional toll booths. This is a welcome development for motorists who have had to endure long queues and delays at toll booths in the past.

While the exact details of the digital collection system are yet to be announced, the Road Minister-designate’s assurance is a positive step towards improving the country’s road infrastructure and revenue management.
